"The coronavirus reared its ugly head in January, 2020. President Trump placed a travel ban on flights coming in to the USA from China a few days later. The coronavirus was rattling its sabers and firing warning shots across the bow of the world as a warning.
However; my wife, Carolyn and I proceeded with our previous plans of making a trip to Florida during the last week in February and the first week in March to spend time with several of my students, who have winter homes in Florida, and going out on location to paint the Florida scenery.
Our stops included visiting with Ash and Charlotte in Live Oak, Patsy and Neil in Orlando, Cathy and Steve in Fort Pierce, and Doug and Hene in Howey-in the Hills.
The first “Plein Air” stop was on a huge ranch, thousands of acres, that was situated just north of Lake Okeechobee. Daryl from Sarasota joined Cathy, Patsy and me at the ranch to paint for the day. I painted two of the paintings in the gallery below on that ranch. The photos were taken on our outings.
From there we went to Cathy and Steve’s house near Ft. Pierce where Cathy and I went out on location to paint for two very full days. I painted there four of the paintings shown below.
Our next stop was a three day visit at Doug and Hene’s Castle, which is situated near Howey-in-the Hills. Doug wanted my assistance in getting three very large paintings started, that he could finish by himself later. His paintings were done in his art studio.
Upon our return to North Carolina, I resumed teaching my regular classes in my Studio/Gallery at the Cowee School Arts and Heritage Center, near Franklin, North Carolina. Then the school was put on “Shut-Down” status the third week in March because of the virus. I couldn’t have regular classes, but I was allowed to continue with the three and a half day pre-scheduled Personal Painting Retreat in my studio with Barbara from Asheville, North Carolina.
The fourth week of March I moved paint supplies and canvases to my garage/workshop in our basement, making it my art-studio-annex. The paintings in the gallery below were all done during the “Shut-Down” of 2020. I will continue to paint on location and in my art-studio-annex and add more paintings to the gallery below, until the “Shut-Down” is over.
Even though the Coronavirus Pandemic has our country in “Shut-Down”, my wife and I have appreciated the extra time together. We have realized how much we miss socializing with our friends and my students in the art classes at Cowee School. We have learned to make the most of the opportunities we have been given to continue our lives with hope for tomorrow." Jon
